Patient bought a 10-session laser package for AED 5,000 plus 5% VAT. Consumed 3 sessions. Wants a refund of the unused 7 sessions. The calculation walks consumed value vs deferred liability vs refund amount, plus the commission claw-back and the VAT recompute.

Coming soon. Parts of the behaviour described below are on the roadmap. Today: the Package.refund_partial service exists, but the per-session-consumed value is calculated as a flat per-credit share. If your package has variable-value credits (e.g. some sessions priced higher than others), the partial refund uses the average and may not match the patient's expectation. A full credit note against the whole invoice exists; a partial credit-note document (crediting only the unused sessions as its own 381 document) is Coming Soon — until it ships, the partial refund posts as a negative Payment row.

The math#

Original sale: AED 5,000 + 5% VAT (AED 250) = AED 5,250 paid. Accounting at sale: debit cash AED 5,250, credit Package Liability (deferred revenue) AED 5,000, credit VAT Output AED 250.
Per-credit share: AED 5,000 / 10 = AED 500 per credit (excl. VAT).
Consumed value: 3 credits × AED 500 = AED 1,500. Already recognised as revenue across the three session-Done events.
Remaining deferred liability: AED 5,000 − AED 1,500 = AED 3,500.
VAT on the refund: 5% × AED 3,500 = AED 175 (the unused portion of the AED 250 VAT collected at sale).
Refund amount: AED 3,500 + AED 175 = AED 3,675.

The flow today#

Owner approves the partial refund (above the manager refund threshold).
Finance officer opens the patient's package on the patient drawer. Confirms 7 of 10 credits remain.
Finance officer clicks Refund on the original invoice. Selects the partial-package refund path.
System calculates the refund as per the math above. Finance officer reviews the AED 3,675 number against the manual calculation.
Confirms. Negative Payment row created at AED 3,675. Default routes to cash unless the gateway refund path is used (Tap-only today). See refund vs credit-note for the routing.
Accounting posts the reversing entries: debit Package Liability AED 3,500, debit VAT Output AED 175, credit cash AED 3,675. The remaining package liability on the patient drops to zero.
Package marked closed-by-refund. The 7 unused credits are removed.
Commission claw-back: the consumed 3 sessions stay accrued for the provider. No claw-back on the consumed sessions — the patient consumed them. The claw-back applies only to commission accrued on the sale event (if your tenant's commission rule accrues at sale, not on delivery). Verify with your commission configuration.
Loyalty cashback: the cashback earned on the original AED 5,250 sale reverses proportionally to the refunded portion (AED 3,675 / AED 5,250 = 70% of the cashback reverses), per the LoyaltyConfig.
Patient receives a refund-confirmation message with the calculation summary.

What can go wrong#

Variable-credit-value packages: if the package has different prices per session (e.g. first session full price, later sessions discounted), the per-credit share is averaged. The audit columns capture the calculation but the patient may expect a different number
